ENGLISHMEN v. AUCKLAND. VISITORS MAKE 350. AUCKLAND FIVE FOR 107. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 15. The English cricketers opened their tour to-day with a. match against Auckland, at Eden Park. After a spell of hot weather rain fell for a while ahout 1 o’clock, rendering the wicket sodden, and play did not start until 3.30 o’clock, an hour and a half late. iMacLaren won the toss, and after inspecting the wicket decided to bat. The first batsmen were MacLaren and Lowry. Solid, careful play marked the opening stages, and this style of play was (maintained throughout the afternoon. The first wicKet fell at 45, Lowry being smartly caught by Rowntree off Alcott after compiling zs. Titchmarsh filled the vacancy, and with his captain carried the score to 129, when MacLaren, who had played a particularly careful innings for 59, compiled mainly by his favorite off-stroke, was stumped by Rowntree off Anthony. He gave one chance, which was the only chance of the day, when he had scored 29, playing a hard return to Garrard, who failed to accept the catch. Wilkinson followed, and with Titchmarsh, pfiayed out time. Scores : ENGLAND. First Innings. South Australia have lost one wicket for 87 (Gould 24. V. Richardson not out 32, Dolling not out 31). The weathet *vas dull and the wicket excellent. The batting on both Friday and Saturday, against an attack which always required playing, was brilliant and forceful. Taylor made his runs in 149 minutes. Kippax gave a chance when 16, hut otherwise he was faultless. Hendry and Oldfield took full advantage of the tiring bowling. A feature of all the scoring was a revival of the cut. A. Richardson’s three wickets cost 135. Williams took four for 206.

NEW PLYMOUTH v. URENUL New Plymouth had the bad luck to suffer another draw on Saturday, when they played Urenui, at Urenui. As was the case when they drew with High School, they were well in the lead when stumps were drawn. The enjoyment of Saturday’s game was considerably marred by the rain, which set in aS Urenui went to the wickets, but despite the soaking to which the players were being subjected, the game Avas continued. New Plymouth batted first and knocked up 185 for nine wickets, when Saunders declared. Lambert accounted for 71, with several boYindaries. Ferry batted steadily for 40. T. O’Neill and W. Wilson (13 not out) were the main factors in compiling Urenui's 50 runs for six wickets. Bowling for- New Plymouth, Clarke took two wickets for 13 runs and Newbold one for 3, while for Urenui G. The only B grade match played was between New Plymouth B and Western Park Wanderers, at Western Park, when New Plymouth knocked up 63 in their first, innings and 126 in their second, against the Wanderers’ 32 and 54 respectively. For New Plymouth Akers did well in the first innings with 28 runs, but In the second, when they declared with six wickets down. Clarke made 54 and Thomas 35. For the Wanderers no one was successful in reaching double figures in the first innings, but Mnnn (19) ana Hoffmann (10) improved matters in the second attempt. Clarke and W. Hughes shared New Plymouth’s bowling honors, the former taking four wicketis for 9 runs, and the latter five for 21. while he also look six for 18 in Wanderers’ second innings. Wanderers’ wickettakers were Bishop (four for 26), Ward (three for 13). and O’Donnell (two for 3), which were taken during New Plymouth’s first innings.
