MONSTER AEROPLANE.
A THOUSAND HORSE POWER. SUCCESSFUL TRIAL FLIGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. Received Dec. 17, 5.5 p.m. London, Dec. 16. Mr. Bert Hinkler, an Australian, has piloted the trial trip of an aeroplane with a one thousand-horse power eng ne, which is the largest in the world. It was launched at Southampton to-day. The engine consists of 16 cylinders fitted to a long-dis-tance comber with a lifting capacity of seven tons. The aeroplane carries three people, any of whom can change places during flight. The propellor is 16 feet across. There is a special appliance for keeping the hands and feet warm and preventing a gun from freezing. Petrol tanks are self-sealing, so they will not catch fire if pierced by bulMr. Hinkler readily manoeuvred the monster aeroplane, rising and. falling and turning in all directions, with great ease.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW TYPE OF BIPLANE. Received Dec. 17, 5.5 p.m. The Hague, Dec. 15. Fokker has built a new type of biplane, which is convertible into a monoplane in a few minutes. It carries eight passengers and two pilots. It has double steering gear, enabling the pilots to relieve each other without changing places. The machine is intended to undertake a flight to the Dutch Indies.
