AMERICAN EXCHANGE London, Dec. 14. The rise In the value of the sterling exchange is unaccountable by movements on this side. Many foreign loans have recently been floated In New York, and much money raised thereby has been remitted to Europe, which automatically made a demand for sterling. This inspires the belief In some Important quarters that the appreciation of sterling may he checked when remittances go to America to pay interest on our debt. Nevertheless, the present outstanding factors include, firstly, the balance in favour of British trade; secondly, the lovfer prices of commodities in Britain compared with America: thirdly, the maintenance of the standard of British credit, which has been further improved by payments of interest on our debt to the United States. THE PIG MARKET. Only a few weanets were penned at Newton King, Ltd.’s New Plymouth haymarket yesterday, and prices ranged from 16s to 19s.
