KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The election passed off very quietly here, a considerable number assembling at the Town Hall Pictures on the evening to hear the results, which were very slow in coming through. Mr. O. HawIken arrived about 9 p.m., and returned thanks for the support acocrdfed him, and after that the crowd gradually dispersed. The last of the series of euche parties in connection witli the Parish Hall was held on Tuesday night, a fair number being present. The lady’s prize was •Won by Miss Fryer, and the gent’s prize By Mr. B, Brigg*. The committee intend to commence a new series on January 9, 1923, and thence fortnightly. In addition to each evening’s prize, handsome points prizes are also to be giW. The annual meeting of the i’ ’ District Cham’'«r of Commerce was held ip the Parish Hall the other evening, the president (Mr. P. AV. Allen) presiding over a large and enthusiastic meeting. The report for the last year shows that the chamber has been a very live and energetic body. Amongst other matters dealt with were the following':— The issuing of the community calendar; the chamber associated itself with the Town Board and dairy factory in opening the new electric light scheme; the chamber carried out a successful fight against the proposal to alter our mail services; it associated itself with other bodies to appeal to the Railway Department to speed up the mail train; it also interested itself in trying to get a bridge over the stream on the Upper Palmer Road, and approached toe county councils interested. These, and many minor matters, were dealt with, and laken all round the chamber appears to have put a good push into its work. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £4l"l‘6s sd, which must also be considered satisfactory. After the adoption of the report and balance sheet, Mr. J. B. Richards, president of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, who was present with Mr. Mclnnes, by invitation, gave a very able and interesting address on matters of interest to Stratford and Kappnga. Mr. Richards was followed with deep interest by all present, and at the conclusion of his address, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded him by acclamation. The election of officers for the year 1922-23 resulted as follows: — President, Mr. P. W. Allen (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. V. Tait and C. Severne; secretary, Mr. Hessell; executive committee, Messrs. R. E. Williams, C. S. Hill, F. Harris, J. J. Davidson, P. Harding, R. D. Dagg; •auditor, Mr. W. B. Fearon. During the meeting ten new members were elected. A general discussion took place as to means to be adopted to popularise the town for Christmas and New Year. Certain proposals were adopted and left with a committee to carry out. Messrs. R. E. Williams and Sons, our local butchers, who have a reputation for supplying nothing but the best meat, have just made adequate provision ior the Christmas season by securing a particularly choice line of spring lambs, wether mutton and fat bullocks from J. F. Stevenson, of Kapuni.
