BANK INSPECTOR’S HOME ROBBED.
TWO UNWELCOME VISITS. f Twice recently the residence of Mr. T. E. Cor kill, bank inspector, at Oriental Bay, Wellington, has been entered by a burglar. An arrest was made by the police on Sunday afternoon. The first entry was made on August 17, when £4 in money, a silver wristlet watch, a fountain pen, and several small articles were missed by Mr. Cor-
bin. Though the matter was reported to the police no clue could be obtained. On -Saturday night another unheralded visit was paid to the house during the absence of the family. On returning home after 11 o’clock Air. Corkill found that hie roller top desk had been burst open, apparently with a poker, and £l4 in cash, a lady’s wristlet watch, a rorch, a fountain pen, and other things were gone. The thief must have entered the house between 7 and 11 p.m.
As apparently no other people in the. neighbourhood were the subject of such unpleasant visitation the owner arrived at a clue which was communicated to the police at 10 a.m. yesterday. Five hours later Acting-Detectives Jarrold, Hunt, and AlcLennan arrested a young married man named Cecil Edward Hatfield, who was then staying at the Carlton Hotel. Entrance was effected by a ladder through an upper story window. It is stated that the accused’s wife bad for some months been employed in domestic service in the household. Most of the stolen property has been recovered.
