BAYLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, /• > WON BY P. GROVER The annual sports to decide the winnei of the Bayly Memorial Scholarship for 1922 were held on Saturday on the New Plymouth High School grounds, which had been placed at the disposal of the Rugby Union by the school authorities. The scholarship was established to perpetuate the memory of the late Mr. Aif. Bayly, who, as a footballer, did much to place Taranaki football prominently before the public of the Dominion. Every boy under the age of 14 years who is the holder of a proficiency certificate can enter for the scholarship, which carries £lO per annum for two years and also a gold medal to the winner, and is decided on the results of the sports, which Include, running, jumping, and kicking the football, etc., easy standards being set.
This year seven schools had entered 25 competitors, of whom eighteen were present. The morning set in wet, and though the weather cleared a little later, heavy rain fell during the afternoon, making mutters very unpleasant tor the officials and competitors, but the programme was run through well up to time. Mr. W. H. Moyes officiated as starter, Messrs. A. G. Papps, R. L. Mcllroy, Stephenson, Adlam, Pope and Blcheno (Eitham) as Judges, and Messrs. Jago and Garcia as timekeepers. The Rugby Union representatives present were Messrs. W. H. Moyes, A. L. Humphries, A. J. Papps, J. Garcia and G. E. Jago.
Competition throughout was very keen, and, with the exception of the kicking, the performances put up by the boys were good. The scholarship was won by P. Grover (New Plymouth High School), with 110 points, H. Fookes (New Plymouth High School), 104 1-6 points, being second. Then followed: I. Dickie (Fltzroy) 91 2-3 points, C. Korff (Central), 76 2-3, H. Olson (N.P.H.S.) 65, F. Davis (Central) and J. Warner (Central) 55 points, R. Cuff (Eitham) and R. Sampson (N.P.H.S.) 40, J. Medley (N.P.H.S.) and D. Johns (N.P.H.S.) 35, L. Barlow (N.P.H.S) 30, S. Anderson (Hawera) 30, G. Slyfield (Fltzroy) 22%, H. Moor (Stratford) and J. Wilkins (Oakura) *zo. H. George and D. Parkin (Fltzroy) were the other competitors. Detailed results:
100 Yards; standard, 13 sec.—First heat: J. Warner (Central) 1, F. Davis (Central) 2. J. Wilkins (Oakura) and C. Korff (Central) also gained the standard. Second heat: P. Grover (High School) 1, J. Medley (High School) 2. L. Barlow, H. Fookes, H. Olson (High School) gained the standard. Third heat: I. Dickie (Fltzroy) 1, G. Slyfield (Fltzroy) 2. S. Anderson (Hawera) also gained the standard. Final: P. Grover 1, J. Warner 2, J. Medley 3. Won by a yard. Time, 12 440 Yards; standard, 70 sec.—P. Grover (High School) 1, J. Warner (Central) 2, F. Davis (Central) 3. C. Korff (Central) also gained the standard. This proved a great race. Warner soon went to the front and led to with a few yards of the tape, when Grover caught him and just got. home with inches to spare. Time, 63 sec. High Jump; standard, 3 ft. 9 In.—H. Olson (High School), 4 ft. 2% in., 1; P. Grover (High School) 2, J. Warner (Central) 3. F. Davis, C. Korff (Central), R. Cuff (Eitham), L. Barlow (High School) and S. Anderson (Hawera) gained the standard. Long Jump; standard. 12 ft. 6 in.—P. Grover (High School) 16 ft., 1 In., 1; J. Medlev (High School), 15 ft., 2; C. Korff (Central), 14 ft. 6 in., 3. F. Davis (Central), R. Cuff (Eitham), J. Wilkins (Oakura), R. H. Sampson, H. Olson, H. Fookes. L. Barlow, D. Johns (High School). I. Dickie (Fltzroy) and S. Anderson (Hawera) also qualified. Place Kick; two kicks at three angles; standard, two goals.—lvel Dickie (Fitzroy), H. Fookes (High School) and C. Korff (Central) tied with three goals, and divided the .points; vfhile F. Davis (Central), R. Cuff (Eitham), and D. Johns (High School) also gained the standard. Punt; standard, 30 yds.—H. Fookes (H>gh School) 1, I. Dickie (Fltzroy) 2, H. Olson (High School) 3. Dribbling, 50 yds., between sets of flags, standard time, 16 sec.-B. H. Sampson (High School), 14 2-5 sec., 1: H. Moor (Stratford), 14 3-5 sec., 2; H. Fookes (High School), la sec., and G. Slyfield (Fltzroy), 15 sec., equal 3. The only ones to qualify.
TO-MORROW'S EVENING RUN. The final evening run of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club before Christmas will be held to-morrow evening at 6 o’clock on the High School ground.
