The Australasian tennis championships resulted : Singles.—Anderson defeated Patterson 6—o, 3—B, 3—6, 6—3, 6—2. Doubles. —Patterson and Hawkes beat Anderson and Peach B—lo, 6—o, 6—o, 7—5. Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs. Molesworth beat Miss Boyd 6—3, 10—8. Ladies’ Doubles.—Misses Boyd and Mountain beat Miss St. George and Mrs. Utz I—6, 6—4, 7—5. Mixed Doubles.—Hawkes and Miss Boyd defeated Utz and Mrs. Utz 6—l, 6—l. INJURY TO TILDEN. Received Dec. 10, 5.5 p.m. New York, Dec. 9. Tilden has declared it is now certain that what is left of his middle finger will virtually be useless for gripping the racquet, and it will therefore be necessary to build up an entirely new system of play, as many of his best tricks will be lost. His backhand and forehand drives are the only strokes not affected. He does not. expect ever to again reach championship class.
THE DAVIS CUP. NEW ZEALAND A SEPARATE NATION. Sydney. Dec. 9. The Australasian Tennis Council adopted alterations of championships’ conditions. The championships will be held in January each year. It was decided to cable the United States that Australia had no objection to New Zealand entering for the Davis Cup as a separate nation. Accounts in connection with the Davis Cup match at Auckland were approved, but the council passed a resolution disapproving of the principle of honoraria to secretaries.
