AGRICULTURE IN BRITAIN.
DEVELOPMENT EXPENDITURE. *By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 8, 8.35 p.m. London, Dec. 7. The Minister of Agriculture (Sir R. A. Sanders), addressing the Council of Agriculture, announced his intention of appointing a departmental committee to consider the difference in the prices of the commodities the producer received and the consumer paid. It was proposed to spend £850,000 in agricultural research in the next five years and £450,000 on land drainage before May. Lord ’Selborne was of oinpion that the condition of British agriculture was worse than forty years ago. Then landlords could help farmers in bad times, but now the former were absolutely bankrupt owing to taxation burdens and low receipts for produce.
