The strength of parties in the old House of Representatives was somewhat difficult to estimate accurately. For example, Mr. J. Vigor-Brown (Napier) and Mr. J. Craigie (Timaru) sat with the Liberals, although they were virtually pledged to vote with Mr. Mas,ey. and Mr. Brown crossed over just Jieforc the end of last session. Mr. T. M- IViltord (Leader of the Opposition j never announced his caucus strength, and it was not easy to separate Liber»l« from Independents. Following ar? the details of the voting in the various electorates outside Taranaki, embracing a total of 46 representatives of the North Island and 30 representatives of the South Island. Only one member has iheen returned unopposed —’Mr. K. S. Williams (Government) having been re-elected for the Bay of Plenty. Since the general election of 1919 the electoral boundaries have been revised on the basis of the population disclosed by the census of April, 1921. One new constituency, Hamilton, was created in the North Island, and one, Bruce, wae extinguished in the South Island. The official endorsement of the Reform Party has been given to 71 candidates, and each of these is donated by “G.” They include Mr. L. M. Isitt, Christchurch North, who has been officially adapted to avoid vote-splitting, he being pledged to vote lor Mr. Mmsey on a no-confidence motion unless the Liberal-Labor Party has an absolute majority over all other parties. Candidates supporting the Government, but without official endorsement, are denoted by G (u); while “0” signifies supporters of the Liberal-Labor opposition; “-L” supporters of the Labor Partv; "I.L.”* Independent Labor; and “I” Independents not pledged to any of the three parties.
