KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday, November 25, the Manaia C. tennis team came up to Kaponga, and played the, Kaponga B. team. Kaponga- were victorious by a number of sets, but, in fairness to the Manaia players, it must be mentioned that it was the first time most of them had played on asphalt courts. The bazaar held in the Town Hall on Friday last in aid of the Methodist Church funds was a great success, and will result in a good sum being secured. All tennis and cricket matches in Kaponga were off last Saturday on account of the wet weather. They will be played next Saturday, weather permitting. The interest in the election is keen here now, and both parties are conducting an active canvass. From reports received, the contest is going to be very close, both sides being confident. * An unpleasant feature, however, of the election is the fact that sectarianism is creeping into our politics. Most farmery are now overhauling their harvesting maclunery, preparatory to hay-making. The hay crops have made great strides lately, and there will 'be some very heavy cuts, particularly on land that has been top dressed, as we have had sufficient moietur to dissolve the manures. *
Whilst on the, topic of top-dressing, it is very pleasing to note that basic slag has now dropped in price, and is within the reach of most pockets. There is no doubt that all of our country has gone back owing to the want of topdressing due to the- high prices of slag, etc., but, now that the price has dropped, fanners will no doubt avail themselves- of the opportunity that the nev price gives. The concert given by the pupils of the Kaponga Convent School last evening was a great success. The hall was crowded, and each item was well received. It is pleasing to parents to notice the splendid results achieved by the pupils of the local schools at the proficiency examinations. Th? results, as reported in the News, reflect great credit on the teaching staffs of the two schools here. The Kaponga Town Board has arranged a splendid programme of pictures to be held in the Hall on election night. Seats will be at a premium that night, and the early bird will have to be very early to secure a seat.
