SUPREME COURT.
THE CIVIL LIST. ) Yesterday was a light day at the Supreme Court at New Plymouth. In the morning it was intimated that a settlement had been arranged between the parties in the action Huckstep v. Atkinson, and the case of Hannah Gavin v. Edward Elliott Snowball, in wmen £lOO6 was claimed as damages for alleged breach of promise to marry, was then called. It had been thought that this ease would not come on till Friday, a.nd Mr. C. H. Croker, acting for counsel for the plaintiff, advised His Honor Mr. Justice Chapman that he had telegraphed his friend at Napier that the court was unwilling to make concessions to counsel at a distance, and that, if he was not ready to proceed on Friday morning the court would follow the course it thought proper under the circumstances.
His Honor said he was not concerned with consideration for counsel at a. distance. His duty was to be here in readiness for the case, and he should have been here days ago. The idea however, had been encouraged that the case would not be reached before Friday, and it would he allowed to stand at that, but His Honor said he did not intend to have the jury panel in attendance on election day, or to aPow the panel to be called for next week. He did not blame Mr. Croker in anyway. as he had done the-best he could according to his instructions. The following cases on fhe list have been imported settled, and have, therefore. been struck out: David Morr and another v. Stanley Pead, Frank E. P. Besley v. Stanley C. Pea. Archibahl C. Johnstone v. Thomas Northcott. The case of George Preece v. Edward Norman has been adjourned till next session.
