UNITED STATES’ SUBSIDY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington. Dec. 4. The Postmaster-General announced extension of the moil subsidy contract with the Oceanic Steamship Company providing a subvention of 22,532 dollars for each monthly sailing to Australia. The arrangement is effective from the expiration of the six months’ contract concluded last July, but no definite period for its continuance is fixed. The Oceanic Company last May requested a two years’ contract at the rate of four dollars per statute mile, declaring it suffered sixty thousand dollars loss in 1921. This the Postmaster declined to do. but a temporary compromise was reached of twenty-two thousand dollars monthly. The newest arrangement has been made in anticipation o'f the final settlement of the ship subsidy issue. If the Subsidy Bill passes the Postmaster will seek the transport of the mails on a poundage basis.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
