ALLEGED ELECTION SLANDER.

PROMINENT POLITICIAN TAKES ACTION. Somewhat of a sensation has been caused in a neighboring electorate by the issue of a writ by one of the candidates —a prominent member of the Reform Party—against an elector, who is alleged to have uttered slanderous statements concerning the sobriety of the candidate (says the Manawatu Times). The proceedings threaten to become complicated by the fact that inatruc tions have been given for the issue of a second writ, wherein the prospective defendant in the first action is seeking satisfaction from a third party —to wit, the person to whom the original slanderous statement was alleged to have been uttered. The ground of the second action is said to be that the third party communicated in writing to the first party the statements which the defendant in the first acion was alleged to have made.
