Orders for papers may aiso be left with him. MAHDI GRAS DAY. THE FINAL EFFORT. November 29. To-morrow (Thursday) will see the practical conclusion of Stratford’s great effort to raise funds for the purpose of providing the town with a permanent and credita'ble band. To-morrow will be a gala day and the organiser of the carnival, Nir. John Hopkins, who has so actively guided the campaign for two months, expects to loosen the spirit of revelry and to make the day a memorable one in Stratford history. The general public, some of whom may not have taken a part in the carnival so far, will be given an opportunity to show their appreciation of the good work done by the energetic, committees in the interests of the town, at no little expense to themselves. A programme of events has been mapped out that should attract the public from far and near to join in a day’s jollification, the equal to which, may not come again in years. The spectacular procession will move from the town at about 12.30 p.m. for the showgrounds, accompanied by the five brass bands which have entered for the contest. At the showgrounds a comprehensive programme of events has been arranged. The band contest should create a great deal of interest and bicycle and other events should keep things moving. During the evening the lantern parade will be held and dancing on Broad, way will be indulged in. From 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. all vehicular traffic on Broadway between Regan Street and the Post Office will be suspended. From seven o'clock the voting for the various candidates at the Mardi Gras headquarters will be open, and the number of votes in favor of each candidate will 'be announced at intervals until 10 o’clock, when the election will close and the final results will be made known. All the schools in the district will observe a holiday and business premises will be closed from eleven o’clock.

With to-day’s count there was no alteration in the respctive positions of the candidates, but it is expected that the closing Hours of the election will bring forth keen' excitement and some surprises. The final entertainments by the individual committees were held last night and to.night. Last night the 8.8. entertainers held a concert and dance at Cardiff, in which district they are always well received. The Sports made the journey to Huiroa and spent a few hours with an enjoyable concert and dance. To-night the country committee conducted a dance at Midhirst, a number of the townspeople assisting Miss Kivell’s candidature. VISITING CHORISTERS. The members of the Royal Wellington Choral Union to tour Taranaki in connection with th'e production of “The Messiah” will arrive in Stratford by the 1.38 p.m. train on Friday, and will be immediately motored to their billets. A civic reception will be tendered to the visitors at the residence of Mr. Percy Thomson at 3 p.m. In the event of wet weather the function yill be held in the Town Hall. After the performance on Friday night the visiting choristers’ local performers, and members of the Stratford Musical Society will be entertained at supper in the Parish Hall. The howling green, tennis courts, and the Egmont Club have been thrown open to the visitors during Friday and Saturday. An invitation has been extended to the visitors to visit the Ngaere Gardens on Saturday, leaving Stratford by the 10.18 train. GENERAL ITEMS. The results of the cow-judging competitions at the recent Stratford show have been announced as follows: —Advanced class: L. Gower 1, K. Grant 2, A Gernhoefer 3. Secondary: M. Kilpatrick 1, S. Marx 2, J. Preo 3, B. Martin 4, T. McCluggage 5, A. Boyd 6, D. O’Sullivan 7. At the concert and prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Methodist Sunday School last night the annual report was presented. It showed that there were 170 scholars on the roll, with an average attendance of 136, as compared with 116 and 74 respectively last year. Prizes and certificates won at the Sunday School Union examinations were presented, together with prizes given to the scholars by the school for -good conduct and regular attendance. The following rinks from the Avon Bowling Club will play Inglewood on the Inglewood green in the shield competition to-morrow. Play commences at 3 o’clock:—R. Pepperell, W. A. Betts, H. L. Betts (skip); W. S. Bremner, H. Masters, J. Weston, J. Masters (skip); S. G. Remmington, A. R. Masters, F. Weston, H. £. North (skip).
