The. official Mardi Gras ball was held in the Town 'Hall last night, and although the attendance was not so large as was anticipated this did not detract from the enjoyment of the function. The hall was lighted in pleasing colors and. a beautifully illuminated drown was suspended over’ the stage. A good number of fancy dresses were in evidence, especialy among the ladies. Th' 1 ladies’ prize for fancy, costume was won by Miss Rouvray, who represented a brown paper. parcel. The Mardi Gras orchestra supplied excellent music for the dancing, and Mr. D. Clark gave every satisfaction as M.-C. The catering was well carried out by the .Stratford Marble Bar Company. GENERAL ITEMS. The arrangements for Thursday are well forward, and a most complete and enjoyable programme of attractions is promised. Each of the queen candidates’ committees will conduct various stalls. The A.S.A. wily have charge of the tea rooms, while the Midhirt and 8.8. committees will mutually control the icecream and soft drinks rotunda. The Sports will have the fruit and soft drinks stall located near the grand stand, and will also have their shooting gallery in operation. Each of these committees is now hoping for a hot day that people in attendance may 1 develop a thirst and a desire for fruit. An .official home-made sweets stall will be under the control of Mrs. P. Skoglund. Several entries for ”the Mardi Gras procession have been received, but the organiser would like td receive many more, as there are. five braes bands to take part, and a large number of entries are required to separate the various bands. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) requests the business people of Stratford to observe .a holiday on Thursday from 11 a.m. to allow everyone to attend the Mardi Gras. The Rev. L. B. Neale left for Wanganui this morning to attend the Methodist District Synod. The total gate takings at the recent Stratford A. and P. show amounted to £313, this amount including the grandstand takings. The guessing competition realised ££2. All the latest Magazines and Periodicals, Fashion Books, the “Best Way” series, etc.. etc.; Collins’ Diaries for 1923; now on sale at W. H. Humphrey’s, Broadway, Stratford. The residents of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffaney’s, Broadway. Hours.- 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
