MOKAU—AWAKINO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Once more we are enjoying bright sunshine and fair weather, and so the shearing is once more being carried on at the different stations, where it was Interrupted by the recent bad weather. The o.v. Mahoe put into Mokau on Saturday evening. She had a full cargo. After unloading, she left again on Monday morning, also with a full cargo of coal, wool and butter, something over 3 tons of the litter commodity being shipped this trip. During her stay the captain and crew were hospitably entertained by Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Sampson at a musical evening. Mr. Rolleston, Reform candidate, addressed the electors in the Mokau Halt on Friday, November 17, Mr. S. Whitehead was voted to the chair. Mr. Rolleston supports the Reform Party, and eulogises Mr. Massey as being a leader who has, in the face of great obstacles, piloted the country through stress and storm .to the very best of his ability. He thought though Mr. Massey’s party’s policy was good, there was still room for improvement. Ke himself is a backblocks farmer of some 12 years’ standing, and therefore knowing something of the needs of the “waybacks,” thought It his duty to contest this seat, and to ao his very best, if elected, to lighten the burden- of those who lived and tolled far from the “madding crowd.” In answer to Mr. W. D. Black, he said he was not In favor of a State bank. The Bank of New Zealand was all that was required, besides being a big asset itself to the Dominion. He said (also in reply to a question by Mr. Black, who asked what Mr. Rolleston proposed to do to cut down Parliamentary cost) that he would propose that less time be taken up in session. Mr. Blltcliff asked what were the candidate’s views on the Prohibition question, to which question there was no reply.
Mr. Dave Scott then asked if Mr. Rolleston was in favor of taxing all old maids and bachelors over the age of 21, to which the candidate replied that as he himself had been a bachelor for 41 years, and knew their miseries, he was not in favor of adding to their troubles by taxing them. He thanked those present for their attendance and attention, and assured them if elected he would do his best to further the interests of this constituency. Mr. Whitehead, on rising to propose a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr. Rolleston, reminded those present that the candidate had ; honesty and youth, added to 12 years’ experi- : ence in the backblocks, to recommend hiun. The vote of confidence and thanks was carMr. Rblleston spoke to the electors in the Awakino Hall on Saturday night, on the same lines. There was a good attendance and a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr. Rolleston was carried. Mr. W. T. Jennings will meet the electors in the Mokau Hall on Friday, December 1. A social in aid of the local tennis club will be held In the Mokau Hall on Friday, November 25. There will be singers present from all parts of the district, and a, good evening's fun can confidently be looked forward to. There is also to be a balloon dance in aid of the same fund, on December 9. The visit of. the Awakino Tennis Club to the Tongapurutu courts has been, on account of road conditions, indefinitely postponed. Mr. Geo. Lake, of Awakino, the energetic hon. secretary of the Awakino Racing Club, is working hard to make the forthcoming meeting on December 2 a big success. I regret to report that Miss Dorrle Whitehead, daughter of Mr. S. Whitehead, has bad to go out to Taranaki for medical advice, as she has been suffering for same weeks from a form of “flu.” Mr. Sell, Home Mlssioner, held Anglican service in the hall at Mokau on Sunday morning last, and at Awakino in the afternoon : also at Tongaporiitu the same evening. Something strenuous we think! If sufficient money is collected a Christmas tree for the children will be hold on New Year’s Eve. There will be games, dances, and all sorts of fun for the kiddies till 9.30, when Father Christmas will appear and distribute his gifts. After that, supper will be dispensed. Then the adults will take the floor. Each year for 4 years this has been done, until last year, when, on* account of only £4 3s 9d being collected, no tree could be held, this amount being held over to see what could be gathered this year. Mrs. Christofferson has the matter ,in\hand, and if sufficient money is not forthcoming in due tbme, notice will be given, and the donors can have their money returned. A dance will be held in the Awakino Hall after the races. WHAREROA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very interesting and keenly contested game of basket ball was played on the local schoolground between the Whareroa and the Manala school children last Saturday morning. The day was beautifully fine, and the children thoroughly enjoyed their outing and the friendly contest. The home team proved the winners by 14 to 4. A plentiful morning tea was supplied by the local ladies. Mt. Dakers, on behalf of the Manaia school children, thanked the Whareroa people for their hospitality and kindness extended to the visitors. He was also pleased to say the Manaia children had taken their defeat gamely. Mr. Eustace, speaking for Whareroa, returned thanks for their kind remarks, and trusted that when the home team are beaten that they might show the same sportsmanlike spirit. Three hearty cheers were given for the departing guests.
