The chairman said the amount of £750 voted for the Tangarakau Gorge road was not so much as the Chamber wanted, and the sum would not go very far. Perhaps it would mostly go in preliminary expenses, but it would be satisfactory to have a start made on the work. Some part of the money might go in opening the metal pit in the Gorge. In a letter dealing with the now Post Office Mr. R. Masters, M.P., said he had approached the Hon. J. G. Coates, Postmaster-General, who had said he would be pleased to- lay the foundation stone. Messrs. Richards and Thomson were appointed a sub-commit-tee to confer with the 'Mayor and the member for the district on the matter. The chairman said he felt sure that something would come of the Chamber’s agitation regarding the improvement of back-country land. The president extended a hearty welcome to Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, who for the first time since his return from Abroad was present at a Chamber meeti ing. In returning thanks, Mr. Kirk- ! wood said he was glad to be home again and to resume his psual activities.
