Consular reports from Chile indicate that twelve hundred miles of the coast felt the effects of the tidal wave in varying degrees. The ocean is still continuing to ebb and flow back in huge waves. Strange lights flicker over the waters, frightening people who are taking refuge in the hills. An area of 140 miles by 100 miles is denuded of houses. At Vallen-ar the dead now total fifteen hundred, indicating that the total dead through the disaster may reach five thousand, while ten thousand are injured. Railway tracks in the afflicted region were destroyed. The rads show yearning craters, making the transportation of food -supplies possible only on muleback. Food is in great need. The President, Senor Allcsandri, with the Cabinet, he* departed on board a battleship to visit the region. A message from President Harding offers American Red Cross aid if needed.
