WAITARA.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday last. An application for water service connection from Mr. 11. Barn itt, Main North Road, was granted. A_renewal of lease of land on the west side of the Camp Reserve was granted to Mr. W. F. Jenkins. Messrs. Gaustad and Marlow and Co. wrote asking the council’s endorsement to a sub-divisional lease of part of the company’s property, situated in West Quay, Waitara, to Mr. S. Topless, a plan being submitted.—Consent granted. The Municipal Association’s solicitor (Mr. Martin) advised regarding the council’s status* in diverting storm water into a natural water course (as has been done in Strange Street), the reply being that the council had the power.-—lt was resolved to inform Mr. J. D ing (over which the question was raised) that it was illegal for him to block the water course. The offer made verbally by the New Plymouth Borough Council, re the supply of electrical current, was confirmed by them in writing, the price being £l2 per annum per h.p. Mr. Frank Brown, eleetrical engineer, Auckland, wrote offering to report on the changing over in connection with the scheme at a fee of £3 3s per day. phis expenses.—lt was resolved that Mr. Brown’s offer be accepted, and that the New Plymouth Borough Council be notified that their offer was acepted subject to the Waitara Borough Council obtaining the necessary authority to borrow. Mr. W. F. Jenkin was allowed remission, of half rates of his untenanted property in Queen Street. The borough overseer reported that the health officer gave a good report of the borough. A new refuse dump had been mapped out on the east beach for Messrs. Borthwick’s. and all refuse will he buried. The Works Committee reported that to asphalt the footpath from Rennie’s corner to S. D. George’s shop would involve too much expense and the money could be put to better use in the main street. They suggested laying a cinder path instead. The Mayor again brought up the vexed question of the bridge. He said the bridge required chapping and painting.—No action was taken owing to want of finance. CLIFTON FOOTBALL CLUB’S BALL. The annual ball of the above club took place last Thursday. The club did a lot of-work in getting the floor ready, decorating, etc., but they were certainly unlucky in having a bad night. About *0 cpuples were present, instead of 300, who were, there had io leave for the Clifton Hall to finish the night. The music was supplied by Miss Fowler’s orchestra. The duties of M.C.’s were in the hands of Messrs. Waters, E. Procter. B. Jury and D. Telfar. The j children’s dance was held the following ; night, but rain again spoiled the attendance. The club’s annual function is going to show a big loss.
