CHURCH AND PROHIBITION.

DECISION OF SYNOD. TO AVOID PARTISANSHIP. By Talegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Prohibition question has been occupying the attention of l , the Anglican Diocesan Synod for two days, and a decision was finally reached to-day. Mr. S. F. Whitcombs moved: That this Synod desires church people to vote in favor of Prohibition. The Rev. Hoani Tarata moved an y amendment that this Synod, while emphasising the principles of temperance, deprecates attempts to identify the Church with any partisan opinion, or to ally it with any political party. Mr. Parata’s amendment was put and carried, and Mr. L. D. Ritchie moved a further amendment: That this Synod, recognising the great evils arising from the abuse of spirituous liquors, considers it is the bounden duty of every dhurehman, either to vote for national Prohibition, or to actively pursue other steps calculated to effectively reduce or remove the evils in question. Mr. Ritchie’s amendment was lost by a substantial majority, and the Rev. Parata’s motion was carried by about a similar majority.
