Tiune, lmin. 27sec. NOTES ON THE RACING. SOME STIRRING CONTESTS. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Christchurch, Last Night. The conditions were very pleasant for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, and the racing was easily the best of the week. The Canterbury Cup and the New Zealand Oaks, in spite of small fields, provided stirring contests. Racing opened with the Port Cooper Hurdles, and in a field of eight Sir Roseberry, Passenger, Cerebus and Fisher were evenly backed. Cerebus jumped to tht* front at the second hurdle, and was never again headed. Fisher blundered at the third jump, and Passenger nearly came down at the second to last when going well. These tw<j were still able to head the rest of the field at the finish, but Cerebus won easily. He is a great frack galloper, but has the reputation of not being solid. Sir Fanciful fell. There were ten starters for the Spring Nursery Handicap, Murihaupo being fancied. In the early stages Razzle Dazzle and Avonlea were Indulged in the lead, but Murihaupo strolled past them at the distance and won as he liked. He is a good sort of a galloper, hy Sunny Lake—Equitas, so he is Ijred for speed. Wild Hind got off badly, and then was up near the front at the end of three furlongs, only to stop again. The Otaio Plate attracted nine competitors, Angelo being popular. Red Gown was in front soon after the start, followed bj’ Kilmoon, 'Tentorfleld and Angelo. On reaching the straight, Deucalion went oh to win easily from Angelo, who outstayed Red Gown, while Bumptious finished well to get fourth. Deucalion won a double at the Grand National meeting, and he is liable to go on with more successes. The scratching of Trespass and Cupidon reduced the field for the Canterbury Cup to four. Gasbag was the choice. The race was full of excitement from start to finish. Winning Hit pulled himself to the front, and soon opened out a gap of ten lengths from Gasbag, who was just clear of the other pair. The field started to close up at the end of a mile, and six furlongs from home Bonnie Winkle was alongside Gasbag, two lengths behind Winning Hit. The last-named was done with at tire entrance to the straight, where Royal Star made a momentary move. The other pair then settled down to a desperate struggle. There was nothing in it at the distance, but Gasbag wore Bonnie Winkle -down and won by a short length. Royal Star was four lengths away, and Winning Hit, three lengths further back. The time, 3 mln. 52 sec., an Australasian record—a fitting result in the memorable contest. Tressayr and Sunny Loch were scratched for the Jockey Club Handicap. Anomaly was fancied. Anomlay, The Hawk, Songbird and Martian Miss showed the way to the straight, where Pluto moved up. Pluto was with the front lot at the dsltance, but faded out, leaving The Hawk and Anomaly to dead heat for final place. It looked as if The Hiawk’s rider was over-confident. Pluto should be all the better for the race. Scrimmage and King’s Trumpeter got off badly, Scrimmage running a great race to finish fourth. Royal Mac and Bon Spec were left altogether. Tfi<* Oaks attracted only four runners, but it was an exciting race. Ardour set the pace, but Enthusiasm joined her six furlongs from home, and racing for the straight Ardour was beaten. Gold Light then moved up, and a desperate battle ensued. Gold Light appeared to have a slight advantage at the distance, hut from there th* ran home, linked together, giving the very rare spectacle of the second dead heat for the day. Para was only about two lengths away, with Ardour well back. A dozen backs took part in the Ashley Handicap. Redlogue was the choice. Valdamo showed the way for three furlongs, when Wharfdale headed them. Pantier, Balasor and Boadicea challenged at the. distance, but Wharfdale hung on and bent Pantier by a neck, with the other pair close up. Wharfdale had not won previously, but he has always had a reputation as a galloper. Kahikatea was very unlucky, finishing close up after meeting a lot of trouble. The win was popular, it being Sir George Clifford’s first success at the meeting. The. day’s sport was concluded with a field of 15 contesting the Avon Welter Handicap. Sunny Loch was the public’s choice. Counterstroke, Blackmail and Tatau Tatau were in charge early, hut at the end of two furlongs Moorland and Counterstroke were in front. On reaching the straight the Held dosed up and there was a big bunch with a chance at the distance. In a desperate finish Tatau Tatau beat Battle Scene by a nose, with Little River a head away. Sunny Loch and Danger Zone were right on top of them, with Blackmail and Moorland dose up. It was a great finish to a good day’s racing. TROTTING SALE INQUIRY. Christchurch, Nov. 8. At the New Zealand Trottfag Association. Mr. F. Johnston, of Sydney, appeared before the board and gave evidence regarding Lord Roanschild and Don Ceasar, which he had obtained through .1. Bryce, and had subsequently sold to two purchasers said to be from Java. He stated he had not seen the horses since he sold them, nor had he seen the men who bought them. He was subjected to a dose cross-examination lasting over two and a half hours, and, after a long discussion, It was decided that the matter be held over for further inquiry, and that the certificate of registration of Escort, owned by Johnston, be cancelled.
