TROTTING AT CHRISTCHURCH. NEW ZEALAND CUP. WON BY AGATHOS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Oaks Day at Riccarton. Hard to beat: a litlte Enthusiasm. Sir Fanciful should win a race shortly. Mamuoteur paid a nice “price” in the Metropolitan. Anomaly is duo to score at any moment now. Danger Zone will be unlucky if he falls to win a race at Riccarton. With a more experienced rider on top, Mnraabi might have won the N.Z. Cup.' That is the opinion of a good judge who saw the race. Foo Chow’s failure in the Metropolitan was not surprising. He had a hard race in the Cup. and may not have recovered. However, “The Chow” should not be despised on the concluding days. The N.Z. Cup winner, Scion, was bred by Mr. T. G. Duncan, in 1918 and is bv Boniform from the imported mare Lady Jean H. bred in England in 1910: by lan Bettyfield, h.v Amphion—Thistlefield, by Springfield—Thistle, by Scottish Chief—The Flower Safety, by Wild Dayrell. Scion cost Messrs. V. and E. Rlddiford top price, 600 gns., at the 1919 Watkanae yearling sales, and as a two-year-old won one race, the Okoia Handicap, at Wanganui. Last season Scion won four races: The Wiritoa Hack Handicap at Wanganui; the Hutt Handicap at Trentham: the Empire Handicap at Wanganui, and the King George Handicap at Ellerslie. Prior to winning the Cup, Scion's form < had been very poor this season. Followers of the favorite had a rocky time ; at Ellerslie on Saturday, only one—the oddson Queen March—being returned a winner, I While the defeats of Highland, Dempsey, Pitta*
wort li and Euphoria cost the public a lot of money. Double-figure dividends were returned by Westminster, Infante and Sheffield (second), while Matinee and Amiform almost touched two figures. Punters’ troubles began with the Trial Hurdles, for which nothing but Dempsey and Triboulet would suit. Copestake upset the chances of the heavy-weights by taking the Quin Abbey gelding Westminster to the front early, and, setting a torrid pace, was never never caught. The winner paid upwards of a “score,” and Miss Melva (the runner-up) would have returned even more. Regardless of the fact that the Great Nor them Guineas lias been a notorious race for surprises, the public plunged on Highland, but the Wanganui Guineas winner failed in the last bit, and Matinee, the first o/ the progeny of Dy Comet to win, scored nicely. The winner is trained by P. Brady, who also rode the colt, which, by the way, is a son of Ristori, the dam of Madam Ristori, Generalissimo and Firesight. Despite these reverses, punters cheerfully laid odds on Queen March in the Welcome Stakes, and after waiting on Mural to the turn, the favorite came right away and won in hollow fashion. Queen March has contested five events this season, winning three and finishing third once. Pittsworth was favorite in the Hunters’ Steeples, e but fell early, and the country also beat Raymond and Myall King. Never Despair, Silverton and Maud Wilson were then left, la charge, and in a stirring finish passed the box in that order—necks apart. Both dividends were in the vicinity of ‘‘the limit.” Royal Blood was a trifle better backed than Lady Ridicule in The Shorts, and the pair were always prominent. Lady Ridicule had the favorite beaten at the distance, but her rider was almost caught napping by Mc.Tavish, the rider of Tama-a-roa. Then came the Mitchelson Cup, Royal Present finished up a strong favorite, carrying about £4OO more than Income, with’ Insurrection best backed of the others, and the trio were in the money. Fourteen went to the post, the veteran “Jimmy” Buchanan taking the mount on the favorite (Royal Present) vice A. McCormack, injured. Income and Perfect Day were first away, and the latter led past the stand from Income, Bootmerday, and a bunched crowd. Along the back Perfect Day still held command, and was followed by Boomerday, Royal Abbey, Income and Bitholia. The field closed up racing to the home turn, and Royal Present closed up fast. Income assumed the lead as the field straightened up for home, and finishing full of running, scored decisively from Royal Present, with Insurrection, who came from last, clbse up third, just in front of Poteen, Perfect Day, and Stork. The winner’s performance was a splendid one, and completed Taranaki's triumphal march in the race in question, which Depredation won in 1919, Volo in 1920, Stork in 1921, and this time Income. Good business! Thirty lined up for the Hobson Handicap, Euphoria being a warm order, with Lord Star, Dancing Doll and Golden Glass next best backed. The favorites were never in it, a’nd Sheffield, who was paying over half a century led until 50 yards from home, when he weakened, and Amiforin (Formative —Mon Ami) beat him by a length. Dovelet was backed as if the Flying was all over, and tried to win from end to end, but the Quin Abbey gelding Infante, ridden by S. Anderson, beat the favorite by the narrowest of margins in a desperate finish. Hipo was a fair third, and then came Geoffrey and Tinohoro. The winner paid upwards of “a score.”
