PUBLIC WORKS MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Nov. 7. The Hon. J. G. Coates onened his election campaign in bls 1 -ne town, Matakohe, last night. Hall was crowded, and the Ministo- was enthusiastically received. He spoke for two hours on the lines of the Massey manifesto. At the conclusion he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and continued confidence. Mr..Hornblow, Liberal candidate, has completed his tour of the southern portion of the electorate. He was well received. MINISTER OF LABOR. Gore. Nov. 7. The Hon. G. J. Anderson addressed a large meeting here last night. He reviewed the work of the Government and repiled to critics who alleged waste. He cited many instances of savings in the departments under his own control. He justified the increased expenditure in the Health and Education Departments, which was necessary for the future welfare of the country. He claimed that his administration had resulted in an improvement of the labor laws, to the benefit of employer and employed. They had fewer and less far-reaching- strikes in the Dominion than any country. The party which had carried the 'country through the troubles of the. war’s aftermath was best qualified to bring it back to normality. The real opposition was extreme Labor, whose .socialistic policy was unsuited to a Bri-ti-h community. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously. THE STRATFORD SEAT. MR. MASTERS AT TOKO. (Contributed? Despite the boisterous weather on Saturday evening, there was an audience of about 120 to greet Air. R. Masters, the Liberal candidate for the Stratford spat, at Toko. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed from the opening until the finish of the meeting, the speaker being applauded throughout his address. Several questions were asked and answered to the apparent satisfaction of the meeting. Mr. Gernhooffer, in moving a resolution of 1 hanks for the address and confidence in Mr. Masters, stated that the district was fortunate in its representation. He eulogised the work done by Mr. Masters, mentioning especially the opening up of the Omona country ’ into the Stratford district by the|construction of the Waitui Road. The resolution was seconded in several places and carried unanimously, anvdst much enthusiasm and cheers for the candidate. Mr. W. Were presided over the meeting. Mr. Masters was entertained by his supporters to supper at the conclusion of the meeting. MR. R. MASTERS AT INGLEWOOD. Mr. Afasters gave a long account of matters political and the part he had taken in the House, interspersed with criticism of the actions of Air. Massey’s party. The speech was attentively followed by the large audience, being sometimes punctuated by applause, but never interrupted, and at its conclusion the candidate was enthusiastically cheerejl. Air. Sisley proposed, and Air. F. A. Reesby seconded, a vote of thanks to Air. Masters, with a further expression of confidence in him as representative for tills electorate. This was carried with enthusiasm.
MR. HINE AT TUTUTAW A. (Contributed.) On Saturday evening Air. Hine met the electors in the Tututawa hall, when a good muster, including several ladies, assembled to hear the candidate. Air. Hine replied to Air. Alasters’ statement in Stratford regarding public works expenditure during the last throe years of Mr. nine’s membership, as compared with what Mr. Masters had obtained during the past three years. Air. Hine reminded his audience that ho was away during the last three years of his membership. and owing to war conditions, very little money was available for public'works, the 'whole attention of the Government and the country being devoted to war effort, and he considered Mr. Alasters was making a. very ridiculous comparison. At the conclusion of his address a few questions were satisfactorily answered, and a vote ojthanks and confidence to the candidate was proposed by Mr. Jacobson, and carried unanimously. THE EG MONT SEAT. AIR. ASTBURY AT AUROA. Air. Astb'urv had a real good meeting here on Friday night last, about sixty electors, ladies and gentlemen, being present in the hall to hear him deliver an address. Air. Astbury is a clean, forcible speaker, and is very convincing. Mr. D. Barlow occupied the cnair. inc candidate spoke for over an hour, and at the close received a vote ot thanics. k vote of thanks was proposed to the chairman by the speaker, and carried by acclamation.—Communicated. THE PATEA SEAT. MR. VEITCH AT RAPANUI. Owin" to the indisposition of Mr. Corrigan, Mr. W. Veitrti. AI.P. for Wanganui. kindiv consented to fill the breach a' Rapanui on Monday evening. Mr? J. Hodges presided over very large attendance and apologised inr the absence of Mr. Corrigan, and expressed the hope that he would have a speedy recovery. Mr. Veite'h gave a very interesting address, severely criticising
the present administration and making ent a very strong case for the Liberal Party. At the conclusion of his address he was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Miss Corrigan. a daughter of the candidate, in expressing at her father’s inability to be present, thanked Mr. Veitch, on behalf of her father. She promised that Mr. Corrigan would, before the poll was taken, visit the district and address the electors.
