Two good town attractions are announced for Thursday next. In the afternoon the Avon Bowling Club give a bowling and croquet afternoon for the A.S.A. candidate. An orchestra will be in attendance and >..pply a good programme of music. On Thursday evening the Sports committee will hold their Black Cat Ca'baret. Elaborate preparations have -been made for this event. Next Saturday the first of the two Silver Shielded Cheese will be on sale at M. G. Headquarters. The guessing competition on behalf of Miss Eileen Kelly (8.8. candidate) on Saturday was won by Miss A, Croee>an, the prie being a 51b box of tea. GENERAL ITEMS. The postmaster at Stratford, Mr. C. K. Holt, has now taken up the duties of registrar of electors fully, and for the next six weeks he will devote the whole of his time to electoral business the duties of postmaster being assumed temporarily by Mr. C. Clark. The executive of the Plunket Society met Messrs. Masters, McMillan, Spence and Rev. C. W. Howard and Dr. W. Gordon of the Society’s advisory board on Saturday. It- was 1 decided to proceed at once with the purchase of a Ford car for the nurses use, and Messrs. McMillan and Spence and Dr. Gordon were appointed a sub-commit-tee to deal with the matter. Several friends of the society made generous offers of temporary assistance, if necessary. and Messrs, lx leeman. Bishop and Co. have allowed a rebate of five guineas to the society, and have also offered to take oversight of the car. At 'Hawera on Monday night a ritual competition was held by representatives of the Stratford, Hawera, Eltham and Palea lodges of Druids for a Shield presented by Mr. S. Whitfield, an enthusiastic Patea Druid and called the Mackay Shield in honor of Mr. James .Mackay, Wanganui, a Past Grand President of the North Island. The competition was the first for the shield and the Stratford team, which had practised hard, were a'ble to win with a total of 725 points out of a possible j 745 The shield is to 'be competed for annually. The residents of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffaney s. Broadway.
