DISTRICT NEWS.

MOKAU—AWAKING. (Form Our Own Correspondent.) The stormy weather we have experienced the last week has caused delay in the shearing. His Lordship, Bishop Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, is to visit Mokau and Awakino on Tuesday next, November 7, speaking at Awakino In the morning, and at Mokau in the afternoon. It is some time ijow since His Lordship visted this part of his diocese, hut we remember him as a brilliant and most interesting speaker, a broad-minded and earnest churchman. Arrangements are well in hand for the forthcoming race meeting, to he held by the Awakino Racing Club on December 2. There are 9 events of good prize value, and given a fine day there should he a record attendance, and a goodly number of entries. Mr. W. D. Thomson, of "The Anchorage," Awakino, is, we are sorry to hear, seriously indisposed, though there has been somewhat of an improvement during the last few days. Mrs. Alfred Black, of Awakino, Is, we regret, also laid up by sickness We trust to be able to soon report her full recovery to health. Miss Meuley, who has been the guest of Mrs. Mouatt, Mangatokl, returned to Hawke’s Bay on Tuesday last. Mr. Russell, of Mokau River estate, left on a trip to Taranaki on Tuesday last. The shortage of butter boxes has seriously handicapped Mr. Ross, our factory manager, pro tem. The o.v. Mahoe not being able to get Into Mokau through stress of weather, is the cause of the trouble, as she has a supply of them on board. Mrs. Lal Black, who has been indisposed for some days, is, we are pleased to report, quite herself again. Mr. S. Fincham, late of Mokau store, left for his new home on Thursday morning, and Mr. H. L. Northern, of Awakino, has taaen possession. The orchards around here are showing promise of a prolific fruit supply this season. Mr. Jas. Fraser, who was one-time manager of Mohakatino station, and a very popular manager too, accompanied by Mr. Neilson, is visiting Mokau for a few days. We are hoping that this visit miay eventuate in a new and progressive settler coming amongst us. The members of the Tongaporutu Tennis Club have given a. hearty invitation to the Awakino members to play a friendly game on the Tongaporutu courts, and the local members have accepted. Miss I’. Murray, our popular local teacher, will play for Awakino.
