INDECENT ASSAULT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 2. In the Supreme Court, Donald Raymond Macartney, described as a picture producer, was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labor on a charge of indecent assault on a male. A brother from Australia made a strong plea on his behalf and said the offence was the result of evil companionship in America. He offered to provide a home for him. Mr. Justice Reed said he was much impressed by the plea, but the penalty was necessary as a warning. A CHRISTCHURCH FIRE. Christchurch, Nov. 2. A wooden shop and dwelling, formerly known as the Ascot Store. North Brighton, was destroyed by fire at 3 o'clock this morning. The tenants, Mr. H. B. Rump and family, had a narrow escape, an invalid daughter being carried out. The insurances total £1550. AN IMPOSTER’S SWINDLES. Auckland, Nov. 2. Edgar Fray lor, who traversed the northern country districts posing as ft collector for the blind, but who appropriated the contributions to his own uses, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the Magistrate describing him as a scoundrel who for years had imposed on the charitable. He had been convicted in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and had now come over to give New Zealand a turn.
