THE SELF-DENIAL APPEAL. RESPONSE IN TARANAKI. * The verf satisfactory total of ’£45,514 Ils Id, the Dominion's response to the Salvation Army’s Self-Denial Appeal, was announced at a meeting held m the Wanganui Citadel on Wednesday evening. The announcement? indicated that the returns were not Completed. Considering the economic conditions and the slump through which 'the country had passed, this total--’tvas considered by. army officiate to be a magnificent triumph. It might also be regarded as a public ' endorsement .■of the social activities of the army. In the Taranaki Division, with headquarters afr Wanganui, the efforts ■yielded £5113 18s 3d. The local contribution was. £1250, an increase of about £lOO over\the amount collected last year, The results in other corps in the division follow: ElthA'm £5BO 13s 6d, Hawera .£564, Inglewood £257, Marton £341, New Plymouth £948, Patea £422, Raetihi fittatford £405, Taihape £l2O, -Taumarunui £lB3 4s !)d. Last year’s %otai* for the division was £5336 15s . It should be mentioned that £7OO raised for XVaitara building scheme at thA'-jcommencement of the Self-Denial considerably affected the New Plymouth total. Returns for the Wellington division ware’incomplete, but the amounts already raised totalled £5637. In the central division, headquarters at Palmerston North, the amount raised was £7168 18s 3d. The amount raised last year was £8313 13s lOd. The Auckland division headed the list for £11,303 2s lid, with Auckland -City corps credited with the best target/ £4OOO, the same amount that was raised the previous year. The division’s total for last year was £12,243 3s lOd. In the South Island the Dunedin division contributed £8450 as against £BBl9 for the previous year. The Christchurch division, which includes the West Coast, contributed £7559 as against £7558 14s 6d. Although the returns show a falling off When compared with those of the previous year, still the result is most satisfactory, and is another indication of the generous disposition of the people of this country towards a cause they regard as worthy.
