RETURNED SOLDIERS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation representing the Dominion executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association waited upon the Premier and the Minister of Lands in regard to the questions of pensions, soldiers’ settlement, and other matters. Mr. D. S. Smith, vice-president, wished to know what the Government intended doing respecting the report of the Pensions Commission, and whether the executive could see it and copy it. The Premier said the report would be placed before the public at an early date. Mr. Massey added that it was favorable to the association, and he was wondering how much money would have to be found. The Government intended to do all it possibly could, but not all the recommendations. It was unable to promise an appeal board. Respecting the appointment of Mr. Carruthers to the Otago advisory board, the Minister for Lands repeated the statement made in Parliament, and that now he knew the relationship with the owner of Poplar Grove, Mr. Carruthers would not work in that district. The question of the expenses and pay of men who enlisted in England was mentioned by Mr. Leadley. He said some of these men were not in New Zealand when the time for application closed. Mr. Guthrie stated it was intended to ask Cabinet to grant a renewal of the privilege next year.
