SOAP FACTORY BLAZE.

LARGE STOCKS DESTROYED. BRIGADE’S HOPELESS TASK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Nov. 1. The Zealandia soap and candle factory at Heathcote Estuary, four miles from Christchurch, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Motorists saw the fire at 2 a.m. and broke into the office and saved papers and the safe and telephoned to the fire brigade,, which found that the task of arresting the. fire was hopeless. The fire destroyed the manufacturing portion of the extensive block, also the offices, the only buildings saved being a detached tow of smaller buildings. The' stocks destroyed included a, large quantity of soap and other inflammable material. The fire was still burning at 11 a.m. The factory was insured for £lO,OOO in the New Zealand office, £lO,OOO in the Commercial Union t and £20,000 in the 1.0. A. The loss’was unascertalnable.
