DIAMONDS FOR BRIDE.
EXTRAVAGANCE OF EX-KAISER. WHILE THE PEOPLE SUFFER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Nov. 1, 8.10 p.m. Berlin, Oct. 31. The VoYwaerts states the ex-Kaiser has ordered a diadem of seven hundred diamonds set in platinum, and also a pendant and ear-rings as a wedding gift to his bride. The smallest stone is a half carat. The diadem alone is valued at eight hundred million marks. The Vorwaerts points out that the gift harmonises with the ostentation and extravagance of the ex-Kaiser’fi reign, while the nation is suffering from the bitterest need. Millions arc hardly able to obtain bread, and yet the man who plunged the nation into this plight can deck his bride with diamonds, the cost of which would suffice to help a hundred thousand families over the distress of the winter. The paper asks how can other countries believe Germany’s insolvency when it puts its overthrown monarch in a position to gratify the whims and caprices of a millionaire loyalist. The journal says the diadem has long been possessed by the Hohenzollerns, and is only being reset. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
