SOLDIER SETTLERS.
CONSTITUTION OF BOARDS. FURTHER BENEFITS SOUGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the Dominion executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Colonel McDonald moved that while satisfied with the principle of setting up a local commission to inquire into soldier settlers’ grievances and the price paid by the Government for land, the association should enter an emphatic protest against the placing of any interested person on any board. The motion referred particularly to the Poplar Grove Estate, it being asserted that the payments required of soldiers were out of proportion to those made by adjoining landowners. Mr. Fair said it seemed incredible that the appointment, should be adhered to while the facts were as stated.
Satisfaction was expressed at, the Minister’s reply to other remits. In Tespect to a recommendation, that the i Government should develop Crown lands : capable of irrigation, the Minister stated that development was limited by ; finance, and could not be undertaken uni til the position improved. It was resolved to press the matter again, i Among other matters dealt with were relief for distressed returned soldiers, housing accommodation, repatriation benefits, provision for employment on Government relief works, and urging on the Government the necessity of immediately reopening to full benefits of section two of the Discharged Soldiers’ | Settlement Act.
