Mr. E. Griffiths left by the mail train yesterday to attend the Manawatu show. Mr. P. W. Cornwall, who is judging in the Jersey section, motored through on Tuesday. Miss Elmira Million, an old pupil of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, gained a second-class pass in English language and literature at the recent Victoria College term examination. A London message reports the death of Father Bernard Vaughan, of the Society of Jesus, aged 75. Father Vaughan was an eloquent preacher who attracted great attention by hia sermons on “The Sins of Society” and kindred eubjeetjs. The death is reported from Foxton oi | a well-known resident in the person oi Air John Hillary, aged seventy-nine years. Deceased, w-ho was born in England in 1843, joined the Navy in 1859, but later transferred to the merchant service. In January. 1807, he landed in the Dominion, and was engaged in various pursuits in the Manawatu district for twelve months, when he waa appointed ferryman on the Manawatu river by the Wellington Provincial Council. He continued in this position till the coach ran 'between Wellington and Wanganui. In 1881 he obtained the Foxton ferry, and in 1883 erected a new one at Wirokino, which he worked in conjunction with the Foxton ferry, In hU occupation he was known far and wide in the early days. The late Mr. Hillary had no relatives in New. Zealand.
