Fire completely destroyed Antrim Castle, Viscount Masserene’s home, including a famous collection of treasures, the Speaker’s chair used, in the pre-union Irish House of Commons and priceless historic documents. Viscount Masserene, his family and a house party escaped scantily clothed, while the servants were rescued with great difficulty by ladders.
