EGMONT COUNTY
(To the Editor). Sir,—ln your issue of 19th Inst., Councillor O’Brien persists in stating that I lost the grant of £2OO for the Kahui road. I would just like to tell Councillor O’Brien once again that the grant for the Kahui road was never lost. It still figures on the Public Works Estimates, and will remain there until the Council is in a position to susidise it £ for £. At a meeting of ratepayers, held in the Pungarehu Hall over 12 months ago, Councillor O’Brien stated that Mr W. R. Wright, through his wilful neglect, had lost the £2OO grant for the Kahui road. I wonder who will be the next to lose that £200? I am also charged with saying that Kahui is a beastly road! What a shocking name to call it! I feel sure Councillor O’Brien would call it something worse than that iC he had to travel over it about twice a week. Re overdraft, it is quite an easy matter to see who is responsible for it. At 31st March, 1921, the debit balance was £ll,BBl 4s 7d; at 31st March, 1922, the debit balance was £12,105 7s; Rahotu riding debit was £3,980 18s, leaving a debit of £8,124 9s over the other ridings. The valuation of the county is £1,711,464. Rahotu riding has a valuation of £774,264, very nearly half the county, and yet its debit is only £3,980 18s Id. not one third of the total debt. This should be sufficient proof that the councillors from Rahotu riding tried to get the Council out of debt. I am pleased to know that Councillor O’Brien thinks he is worth the pay ho receives from the Ccuncil, because he is about the only ratepayer who has that opinion.—l am, etc., WALTER G. GREEN. Rahotu, October 26.
