Orders for papers may also be left with him. “THE MARDI GRAS.” .. F NIGHT. There was a large attendance at the Town Hall on--Thursday night, when competitions were held in aid of the Mardi Grais funds, The programme consisted of 23' items, all of which were much appreciated. Mr. W. Robinson acted as manager. The point# awarded in each section were so arranged that the same possible total, viz.,. 17-b, could be secured under each . heading;. ’. 1 ;. At the'conclusion :of the programme the aggregate mumber of points gained by .each candidate’s competitors was divided-by,.the number of the performers who .appeared for} the respective candidates, thus striking an average. Ry-this system, an average result , was obtained, and- the final conclusion made very interesting.

,/The 8.8.’5: had. very strong representation- in only four performers, and these secured such an aggregate of points, .628,.- that they managed to gain an average of 157 points per performer. . The Sports, with six competitors nominated; piled up a total of 829 points, giving an average of 1381-6, and securing second place. Midhirst-Wharehuia, with five representatives on the programme, amassed 672 points, average 134 2-5, gaining third place, while the six competitors appearing for the A.S.A. scored 754 points, giving an average of 125 4-*G. The detailed results are as follows: 8.8.’s Performers.—Miss Rona Kino, Tosti’s “Good-bye,” I'7o points; Miea Myra Wilson, dancer, 148; Miss Dolores Wilson, character sketch, 153; and Mr. J. Vincent, tenor, “Two Eyes of Grey,” 97; Miss Essie Milner, mezzo soprano, “Only Once More,” 134: and Mr. A. H. Vinsen. baritone, *jMy Ain Folk,” 115. Tdtal 754 points. The latter singer lost points through choosing a song usually recognised as a composition for ladies’ voices, instead of selecting a standard baritone song, although he gave a vejy sympathetic rendering of “My Ain Folk.”

Two enjoyable items which were not on the competitive list were Miss B. Sbeahan’s vocal solo “Heaps of Lickings,” and Mr. C. H. Lawn’s cornet fantasia on “Home Sweet Home.”

Mrs. Hemingway, of Eltham, who kindly officiated as judge of the vocal items, apart from the the comedy numbers, expressed her pleasure at the quality of the voices heard, and remarked that had some of the singers chosen songs more suitable to their voices, an increase in the number of points scored would doubtless have been secured.

The judge remarked of the “The Sands o' Dee,” that this was a very good rendering of the song, but it was an unsuitable item for a popular concert.
