THE COMPETITIONS.
THE FOURTH SESSION. HIGH STANDARD SHOWN. St. Andrew’s hall was crowded last night when the musical and elocutionary competitions were continued. The programme was perhaps the best submitted during the week, and the audience was not slow to show its appreciation. The winner in the recitation section (12 and under) gave a splendid performance of elocution, displaying remarkable talent for one so young. Results:— VIOLIN SOLO (20 and under). Alan Brodie (70 points) 1 Harry McNeill ('63 points) 2 Gweri Leech (60 points) 3 RECITATION (12 and under). This was the biggest section of the programme, forty entries having been received. Competitors were heard on AA T ednesday afternoon, when the six best were recalled for last night’s performance. The final placing was: Isabel Whitmarsh (90 points) 1 Dorothy Barnitt (86 points) \ 2 Norma Beal (84 points) 3 competed: AVillie Geddes (82 points), Lottie A’ickcrs (81 points), Sydney Hartnell (81 points). The judges commented very favorably on this section, stating that the competitors had shown very fine work. The winner gave an exceptionally fine performance. PIANOFORTE SOLOS (20 and under). Muriel A. Pearson (80 points) ...... 1 Norma Lillian Forbes (68 points) .. 2 Dorothy E. AVatkins (60 points) .. 3 Also competed: Mervyn D. Bree (59 points), Olga Aroa (50 points), Nellie Harvey (45 points). CHARACTER SKETCH (15 and under). Lynda Bullock (83 points) 1 The only competitor, who gave a fine rendering from a Shakespearean scene. She was recommended by the judges for a first-class certificate. SOPRANO SOLO (Open). A r era Bree Kathleen Blanchett 2 Ruth Rowe 3 Also competed: Ida George, Nellie Harvey, Madeline Hogue. The judges did not give detailed marks. The competitions reach their concluding session this evening, and a grand demonstration by all the prize-winners will take place on Tuesday evening at the AA’orkers’ Social Hall. This afternoon the girls’ vocal solos, for which twenty-one entries have been received, will be heard at St. Andrew’s Hall, and five will be recalled for appearance on to-night’s programme.
