RACING FIXTURES. Oct. 28,—Poverty Bay T.C. Spring. Oct. 28.—Taratahi-Carterton R.C. Annual. ~ Oct. 28.—Otago Hunt Annual. Nov. 4, 6. —Auckland I|.C. Spring. Nov. 4, 6, 8, 11.—Canterbury J.C. MetropoliRACING IN AUSTRALIA. NOTES FROM MELBOURNE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Oct. 27, 10.10 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 27. Strathredole has been scratched for the Cantala Stakes and the Melbourne Cup. Molyneaux is working regularly at Caulfield. British Arch resumed training at Caulfield to-day in charge of Padfield. The Cypher and Stare have been scratched for the Cantala Stakes. CHRISTCHURCH SCRATCHINGS. Christchurch, Oct. 27. Canyon was scratched for the Stewards’ Handicap at 11.40 a.m. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") To-day’s meetings include the Taratahi-Car-terton gathering at Clareville; the Otago Hunt annual at Dunedin, and the concluding “spasm” of the Poverty Bay T.C. meeting at Gisborne. Judging by the poor fields seen out at Gisborne meetings, that district could do with less permits, which nfight be spread over districts where horses were more numerous.

Form has been so erratic lately that punters must be getting a bit of a headache, and one is almost afraid to attempt to forecast anything in the racing line. However, it may be said that Bitters will carry big money in the Wairarapa Cup to-day, and that Merry Day, Jackaroo, Kahutahi and Tdssore will have plenty of backers in minor events at Clareville.

The New Zealand Cup will be run on this day week, and with only 18 remaining in, there does not appear to be any chance of more than a dozen facing the barrier on the day. Cupidon and Royal Box are nominal favorites, with Penitent, Equitable and Scion next. The final payment of 13 sovs. may see several drop out on Monday evening.

In most quarters Rational is a warm favorite for the Stewards’ Handicap, but The Hawke is not far behind. Of the others, Glentruin, Epitaph and Solfanello appear to be most generally fancied. Anyone who fancies Taranaki horses in the big “double” can secure very long odds about their .favorites. Santiago and Santonlo, who both won races at Trentham on Monday, are full-brothers, being by San Fran—Dolly Fisher. Both are trained by the Awapuni mentor, J. Gibson. Tamatete’s sister. Tukia (Absurd —Tahua), went to Trentham with a great reputation for speed, and in running two close .seconds to more-seasoned horses did very well. Tukia is also half-lster to Perrier, Hupana and Midi, and promises to be the best of Tahua’s “gets” —even smarter than Tamatete, and he was a good one!

On his track form at Wanganui, Hindi should have won a double at Waverley, but he did not —much to some people’s disgust. “Jimmy” Peachey has the brother to Indigo very well now, and if he keeps sound Hindi will be a useful customer to have at the Taranaki Christmas meetings.

One of, the easiest victories recorded at Waverley was that of Euchre 1r the Malden. Euchre is a promising three-year-old gelding, by Husbandman—Vestalis, by Martian—lngleneuk, by Bebonian—Fireside, by Perkin—Warbeck 11. Euchre was bred by Mr. H. Sprat’, and a full-brother, Ici, raced unsuccessfully at New Plymouth and Stratford as a two-year-old in the season 1920-21. A. McCormack, who piloted Royal Present to victory in the Avondale Cup, will have the mount on the Australian-bred horse in the Mltchelsen Cup (1% mile), run on Saturday ■next. Royal Present is galloping in good style, and is one of the favorite division.

Quite an event in sporting circles in Wanganui last week was the arrival of a bouncing, big daughter in the household of Mr. and Mrs. “Jack” Hay, and, needless to say, the new arrival was “celebrated” in time-honored fashion. It a case of ‘‘all well, and father delighted I” “Sam” Price, of Waverley, gave the three-year-old filly Artois (Hallowmas—Arras) a run in the Maiden at the local meeting, and was agreeably surprised when she finished up in fourth place. Artois can muster up a fair amount of pace for four or five furlongs, and might win a minor “hurry-up” at Christmas. , . Zouave (Martian—Rose Red) is now doing everything tliat is asked of him, and it is quite on the cards that he will run well in the New Zealand Derby at Riccarton next month. His dam. Rose Red, is bred on staying lines, being by Stepniak—Madder, and her contributions to the Turf in New Ztealand Include Risingham, Raceful, Sir Ralph and Red Rock. Scratchings posted since acceptances closed tor the chief events at Riccarton Include Insurrection and Talpairu tn the Cup, and MlreuA sonta and Vlyella for all engagements. Insurrection was railed through to Ellerslie this week, and will be a runner In the Mltchelsoll CU cientruln puts up 7 lb extra In the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, making her weight 7.10. Gazeworthy another winner at Trentham. will be required to carry 5 lb extra, bringing her weight up to 6.13. Both , are likely to be very much In the limelight In sprint events at the meeting. The Auckland owner, Mr. J. V\ ilhamson, was a buyer at the Sydney sales, three brood mares and the three-year-old colt Plutos falling’ to his bid. The latter is by from Lady Ceres, and with a little time and building up is expected to develop into a useful performer. He started twice as a two-year-old without being placed, and won a Maiden Handicap at Menangle Park last month. The following re-handicaps have been declared by Mr. J. E. Hen&ys for to-day’s Otago Hunt Club’s meeting: Kennels Handicap—Red Admiral. 10.2; Otago Hunt Club Cup—Strathglass, 12.13.
