WEEK-END TELEGRAMS.

DELAY IK THE BACK-BLOCKS. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, October 2’4. The delay occasioned in the delivery of week-end telegrams to out-lying stations when a holiday occurs on a Monday was brought under the notice of the Postmaster-General in the House by Mr. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo) who said that on such occasions telegrams despatched on Saturday to country stations which closed on Saturday afternoon were not delivered until the following Tuesday for the reason that Sunday and the Monday holiday intervened. In suggesting that some better arrangement might be made the member said that this position arose only on a few occasions during the year and would occur at the coming Christmas. The Hon. J. C. Coates said that there were only a few cases of hardship of the kind quoted as a number of the country post, offices were in' touch with the settlers homes by telephone and when that waa the case the telegram was repeated over the telephone. He suggested that he might be able to meet the case by arranging for the outlying post offices' to be open for one hour on Mondays when that day was a holiday and on tlio member for Waitomo agreeing that this would be satisfactory promised to make inquiries with a view to seeing whether this plan could not be carried out.
