THEATRE FOR THE TOWN.

A PROBABILITY OF THE FUTURE. The question of the provision of a theatre in New Plymouth was referred to at yesterday’s luncheon to Mr. Allan Wilkie. The chairman (Mr. T. C. List) said the Taranaki Amusements, Ltd., had been considering the matter for some time. A theatre to do justice to New Plymouth would, with the necessary land and equipment, run into between £30,000 and £34,000. Those interested would probably go on with the scheme if the public took up debentures to the value of between £lO,OOO and £12,000, secured on the land and buildings, and at a good rate of interest.. A voice: The whole amount would be subscribed in a day. It would be a firstrate investment. The chairman Raid he hoped that this would be the case. It was, however, a matter that would largely depend upon the public, and he trusted that when the proposal was put forward by the company those present would do everything they could to ensure its success. Then the town would have a theatre in keeping with its importance within a year or 15 months. The statement was greeted with applause. Mr. Allan Wilkie expressed gratification at the possibility of the town having a theatre, without which no town, especially one of the size and go-aheadness of New Plymouth, was complete.
