THE MOUNTAIN.

NORTHERN HOSTELRY. The annual meeting of guarantors of the North Egmont Mountain House Committee was held yesterday, Mr. T. C. List presiding over a small attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet (as previously published) were adopted. In moving their adoption, the chairman said the season from a climatic point of view was the most unfavorable that could have been experienced, and the takings had suffered in consequence. Extra accommodation had been provided and various improvements effected, but they were of no advantage, owing to the bad weather. On top of this they had met, with the cyclonic visitation, which had practically wrecked the house. He thought the guarantors had struck the worst year they were likely to, and that during the coming season they would hold their own and possibly recoup their losses. The hostelry would never be a very profitable concern tintil they effected further improvements, such as laying down an asphalt or concrete tenniscourt and built a billiard-room, so that visitors could have some diversion when time hung heavily on their hands. In any case, the hostelry could be regarded as an indispensable and valuable adjunct to the town, and later, when the road was through to Te Kuiti, and tourists could make a circular trip, the hostelry would come into its own and prove a very valuable asset, to the town.

He paid a tribute to the fine work rendered by the members of the committee, who had taken a keen interest in their work, even to taking off their coats and assisting in making improvements in and about the buildings, and acknowledged the services of the secretary (Mr. H. Baily), whose work was largely one of love, and the custodian (Mrs. Cameron), who had cooperated wholeheartedly with the committee.

Messrs. R. J. Deare, C. H. Burgess, and E. Griffiths spoke to the motion, all acknowledging that the committee had done its best under adverse conditions. The old committee, Messrs. C. H. Burgess, N. King, T. C. List, A. Boon, J. Connett, P. White and A. E. Stainton, were re-elected. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr. T. C. List was re-elected chairman. NORTH EGMONT COMMITTEE. The North Egmont Committee afterwards met, Mr. T. C. List being appointed chairman for the ensuing year. A new tariff for park, motor, cottage and house fees was considered and adopted. The balance sheet showed there was a credit of £7l 16s 3d in hand, with liabilities amounting to £142. These would be met by moneys now coming in. The position was regarded as quite satisfactory, and the balance sheet was adopted.
