(By "Moturoa.”) Poverty Bay races to-day. Poverty Bay Hunt annual to-morrow. Heathersprig is due to score shortly. Queens Up may be a bit rich for the Gisborne sprinters. Goldscene should pick up a hurdle race at “The Bay.” Aotearoa is not worth the proverbial tin of sardines. Chaplin will put his backers in a merry mood very soon. Ruddy was backed and beaten at Waverley. Equitable’s form at Trentham was not up to N.Z. Cup standard. Mark Time, who has been sore lately, is in work again at Bulls. On Waverley showing, Complex should be useful over a distance of ground. Lady Nassau has turned sour, and appears to run her races In patches. If Whizz Bang had been brought to Waverley, he could hardly have failed to win the Hurdles. Jockster C. Edwards was riding well at Waverley. Two firsts, two seconds and a third are a good day’s work. . Most of the layers in the Mnaawatu received a row jolt whnh Wag*
iplng paid a remunerative second “div.” at Waverley. i Saturda y’ s second acceptance account ofr | Sunart, Income, First Salute, Admiral Codrington, Bonetter, Tressayr, Verbosity, Corn Rigs, Bonnie Heather, Omahu, Battle Knight, Lin den, Martini, Erie, Urgency, Lady Nassau and Bonnie Nurse, leaving a bare twenty in the N.Z. Cup.
The consistent. Otauru Kid, who has won four hurdle races on end, paid a false price on the first day at Wellington. Passenger’s fine track form made him favorite, but he was one of the last to finish. Mattock was going well in tlie First Hurdles at at Trentham when his rider’s leg became entangled In the reins of the riderless Cerberus, completely spolHng Mattock’s chance of being second, though nothing had a show of beating Otauru Kid.
There will be something doing when Bathos, Top Score and Murihaupo meet In the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes.
Enthusiasm ran a great race in the Champion Plate, and will be hard to beat in the classics at Riccarton.
As anticipated, Glentruin played a prominent part in the open sprints at Trentham, but her backers had to be content with a very short price on Monday.
Feilding sports supported Wapping for the Mouniahaki Stakes at Waverley, and the splendid second dividend was received with “loud cheers.” Mick King has the old horse looking very well.
Tamatete’s sister, Tukia (Absurd —Tahua), was unlucky at Trentham, scoring two close seconds. There were many who thought she should have won on the second day.
Marqueteur strolled lu “backwards” at Waverley, and his chances of winning a good race at Riccarton next month look promising. Possibly two miles may be beyond his tether, but there are plenty of shorter races (carrying big money) to be ' S set” for.
An overcrowded field in the Farmers’ Plate at Claudelands resulted in two jockeys receiving serious injuries, while two horses w‘ere killed. It is hard to know how to limit fields, but the best idea appears to be to materially- increase the distances of hack races, making the training and racing of “weeds” an unprofitable and futile business.
The sporting spirit which induced the owners of Winning Hit, Enthusiasm and three others to send their horses out to test the champion Gloaming in the Champion Plate resulted in the public being supplied with a splendid contest. The crack horse had to gallop to win, and that he pulled through in flying colors was as much to his credit as to that of his opponents, who tried him out every yard of the journey.
