SECOND NIGHT’S PROGRAMME. MUSIC AND ELOCUTION. A varied and entertaining programme was presented at last night’s musical and elocutionary competitions at St. Andrew’s Hail, New Plymouth, when, as on the opening night, there was a good attendance of the public. ]n the unavoidable absence of Mr. W. G. Reid (chairman of the competitions committee), Mr. R. Cocker presided. The items were attentively followed throughout. the audience showing their appreciation of the general high standard reached by the competitors. Details:—

READING (12 and under). Eighteen competitors in the reading (12 and under) section were heard by the judges yesterday afternoon, when the six l best competitors were selected for appearance in the final on Saturday night. The six competitors chosen for recalls are Norah Ambury, Norma Beal, Gordon Duff. Winnie McDougall, Rena Pepper, and Lottie Vickers. PIANOFORTE SOLO (15 and under). The fourteen entrants in this section were heard in the afternoon, six being recalled for the evening, when the final placings were: Hazel George (“Pierrette’’), 70 points 1 Noeline Thomson (“Novellette”), 69 points 2 Colin Campbell (“Danse des Nymphs”), 52 points 3 Also competed: Nancy Skelton (“Study by Burgmuller”) 48 points, and Alice Bell (“Fall of Pearls”) 46 points. ’HUMOROUS RECITATION (12 and under). Isabel Whitmarsh (“The Unfortunate Girl”), 86 points 1 Gerald Hoskin (“Quarrel in the Oven”), 80 points 2 Dorothy Geddes (“Little Orphan Annie”), 79 points 3

Also competed: Norma Beal (“A Deceitful Appearance”) : Ida Lovegrove (“The Minister Comes to Tea”); Mickey Moir (“When Burglars Come to Our House”). PIANOFORTE DUETS (12 and under). N. Ennis and M. Wooldridge (“A Russian Fete Dance”), 45 points 1 Mary Bell and Alice Bell (“Valse Venetienne”), 43 points 2 Rita Fenwick and Elsie Bell (“March and Chorus from Norma”), 41 points 3 READING (20 and under). Prose reading: “The Thames at Sunset” (from Joseph Conrad). Poetic reading: “Tears, Idle Tears”- (from Tennyson's “Princess”). May McLeod (82 marks) 1 Mildred Ranger (79 marks) 2 Ruby Aitken (78 marks) 3 Also competed: Mabel Crozier and Lottie Valentine. SOLO IN CHARACTER (Open). Gerald Hoskin (“Did You Ever Go Out Courting?”), 60 points .... 1 The only performer. This afternoon, at 3 o’clock, the competitors in the recitation (under 12) section will be heard at Whiteley Hall, and at 4 o’clock those in the recitation (under 15) section will follow at the same place. The competitions will not be held this evening, but will continue at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the St. Andrew’s Hall.
