SPORTS AND PICNIC.

TARANAKI WORKERS’ DAY. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The Taranaki Workers’ Council Labor Day sports and picnic, at Pukekura Park, yesterday. was a very successful function from all points of view. The threatening rain held off and there was a large attendance of the public, who were treated to some well-contested races. The various officials worked exceeding'}’ well and every event came on well up to schedule time, while the children's commltttee Were indefatigable in their efforts to provide amusement for the young people, running close on 30 races between the principal events on the programme.

During the afternoon selections were rendered by the Pipe Band and the Regimental Band, while an innovation was made by the inclusion of piping contests in the programnv:-, which were judged by Pipe-Major 8. Sinclair. An Irish jig and Seaun Trulbhals were contributed as exhibition dances by Miss Jeannie Rae, while two tots, the Misses O. and C. Petersen, competed for the honor in the highland fling, the judge (Mr. R. Rae) placing them in the order named. A baby show was also held, pride of place for babies under six months going lo Ashley Roberts, with Allison McCullough second, and for under 12 months, to Brian Bendall and Ronald Shepherd, respectively.

The wheel races provided some exciting finishes, the final for the mile being a gruelling contest between A. J. Coleman and W. Roebuck, only half a wheel separating them. Coleman had hard luck in the big race, the Labor Day Wheel of one mile and a half. As the leaders entered the straight on the last lap, he wa« moving up to make what looked like a hot finish; but It. Wheeler skidded and both men came down. Roebuck showed that he had an astonishing amount of speed up his sleeve in the two mile, almost leaving the field stand I ing in the home run. The 120 yards hurdles also provided a close contest, inches Only separating the leading men. The schoolboys were set a good test in their marathon rate. After once round the track, the boys left for the racecourse, through the Park; ran round the course and back down the park to run round the track again. Here again the committee had used their energies to advantage; they had the floor in good order, while the decorations in red and pink produced a very pretty effect. The hall was well filled with dancers, who tripped away the hours to the strains of Mrs. George's jazz orchestra, while appreciation Was also expressed of the supper provided. The president (Mr. ,G. Blacker) and the secretary (Mr. R. G. Brabyn) are to be congratulated on the results of the whole of the day's sport.
