NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Wellington, Last Night. For the Spring Trial Stakes, with which the day’s racing was commenced, the scratchings were Balasor, Bonny Friend, Martinique, Kilbend, Vogue, Sunny Vale and Pillage, and a field of a dozen went, to the post. Zouave was in demand, and others backed were Wharfedale, Maboughal, Kahikatea and Refrigeration. The start was a good one. Refrigeration hopped out with the lead, closely followed by’ Bonomel and Zouave. Wharfedale was hustled along, and at the six furlongs was in behind Refrigeration. Zouave lost his position crossing the top, and at the turn for home Refrigeration was still in command from Wharfedale and Zouave was lying fifth. Belov.’ the distance Zouave forged ahead, and in the straight went on to win, easing up, by half a length. Kaotane was a length away, third; Kahikatea fourth, and Wharfedale close up. Tirihanga, Gold Light and Santiago were fancied for the Tararua Handicap. Tinihanga jumped out first, but Militaire and Gold Light soon hit in front and carried on the running to the top bend, where Merry Day, Santiago and Pantier were among those well up. In the run home Santiago ran to the front, and though challenged by Gold Light, hung on well enough to win by the narrowest of margins. Taipairua was three lengths away third, and Militaire was fourth.

The first day’s winner, Otauru Kid, wis the public fancy in the Hurdles, and Matatua and Cerberus had big followings. Passing through the straight, Black Art took the lead, but approaching the mile post Matatua joined him, and going down the hack the pair led Cerberus by half-a-dozen lengths, with Sir Wai and Sir Fanciful most prominent of th. others. Before the straight was reached Sir Wai ran up to Matatua and they ran together to the last fence; but from there Matatua went away, and in the run homo he beat Sir Wai by two lengths. Cerberus was three lengths back, third, and Sir Fanciful was fourth. The next to finish were Kyoto, Black Art, Wamba and Fisher. Astinome was last. The two-year-olds were seen out again In th.Roseneath Handicap, and Tukia, the runnerup to Queen March on Saturday, was a popular choice. Approaching the course proper, Deluge and Tukia were out in front, with Owlscombe handy and Indiana at the tail of the field. Tukia hit the front at the bottom nf the straight, and Inside the distance appeared to have the race in hand; but Murihaupo finished well and got up to win by a head. Owlscombe, who hung badly, was two lengths away third, Deluge was fourth. Enthuse fifth, Benmure sixth and Ralston seventh. Indiana was last.

Bonnie Heather and Scion were the best backed in the Pearce Handicap. The sta.’t was excellent, and when the field had gone a furlong Haurangi and Bodyguard were at the head of affairs, with Printemps In behind and Gasbag In the middle of the field. At the six furlongs the order was the same, except that Scion had improved his position and Bonnie Heather was handy. Rounding the top Gasbag began to make up ground, but he was still well back at the entrance to the straight. Haurangi was the first to turn for home, closely followed by Bodyguard, Scion, Bonnie Heather, and Printemps, with Dainty Step showing up on the outer side. Bon;:ie Heather was in charge at the distance, but Gasbag finished well under pressure, and Bonnie Heather won with a little in hand by a length and a half from Gaspag. Haurangi, Dainty Step and Martian Miss, in line, were the next to finish.

The Champion Plate attracted great attention because of the presence in the field >f Gloaming. The champion entered the birdcage amidst applause, and he looked well. Th* public backed him down to the usual ridiculous price. The half-dozen startees were sent away to an excellent start. King’s Trumpet-sr, Gloaming and Enthusiasm were the first to move, and they led out of the straight. Enthusiasm rushed to the front before the mile post was reached, with Gloaming and King’s Trumpeter lying next. Winning Hit moved up into second place at the seven furlongs. At the six furlongs the order was Enthusiasm, Winning Hit, Gloaming, King’s Trumpeter, Rouen and Trespass. Enthusiasm led into the straight, but at the distance Gloaming took charge, and though Winning Hit was ridden out. The Welkin gelding held him with ease and won by a length. Enthusiasm was two and a half lengths away third, and King’s Trumpeter was fourth. In the Nalnai Handicap Glentruin was early in the lead on the rails, and in the run home she was not troubled win by two lengths from the poorly-backed Backsheesh. Civilform was a poor third, and Blackmail and Passionless were next. In the Ruahine Handicap Para was beaten a long way from home, and the winner turned up In Santonio, who accounted for Novoko hy a length. Two lengths further back came Uleaborg, and Flying Nell was fourth.
