WAVERLEY-WAiTOTARA | MEETING. THE ANNUAL FIXTURE. MARQUETEUR WINS THE CUP. The Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club was favored with fine, though somewnat boisterous, weather for its annual meeting yesterday. This, however, did not affect the as a very large crowd gathered, motor cars and special trains bringing patrons from all parts of Taranaki, and as far south as Palmerston North. 4 An interesting day’s racing was provided, the fields being large and the finishes in many cases close. Mr. H. Coyle, the handicapper, had the winners well concealed, only two actual favorites saluting the judge. Mr. J. Cameron, the judge, hoisted the numbers promptly, while Mr. A. Morse, the starter, had some difficult horses to handle, but acquitted himself well. The totalisator was> controlled by Mr. U. Spriggins. Speculation was brisk, though the figures showed a falling off, being £ 18,266, as compared with £19,875 last year, a decrease of £1609. This decrease was not due to shortage of money, but to the fact that much money was shut out every race. There were no £1 ticket windows, and apparently the machine was unable to cope with the issue of 10s tickets.
The principal race of the day, the Waverley Cup. was won by the locallyowned Marqueteur. who carried his steadier of 9.11 in fine style, and came away at the right end to win comfortably. Both horse and rider were applauded on returning to the birdcage. The secretarial duties were again entrusted to Mr. W. Macfarlane. who had complete arrangements made. The Queen Alexandra Band (Wanganui) rendered a splendid musical programme, whilst the catering and other incidentals were right up to the usual standard.
