COMIC RESULT IN GERMANY. SERIOUS RISING FEARED. PLOTTING FOR SOVIET. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 22, 5,5 p.m. Berlin, Oct. 20. The fluctuations of the mark are having an extraordinary effect. Prices are raised “while you wait.” which has become the byword. It is quite common to enter a restaurant and order a 150 mark meal according to the menu, but have to pay two hundred when it is finished, because meat has gone up while you have been eating it. Frequently waiters press customers to have another drink of beer, as when the barrel in use is empty the price will be doubled. Coals are jumping hourly.
The Prussian Government, in an attempt to deal with the food situation, has decided next year to pay farmers for their wheat in imported artificial manure instead of cash, by which it is hoped to increase the yeild very largely. The food fluctuations are playing into the hands of Communist agitators, and it is feared this may quickly produce a serious uprising. The Communist leaders are openly discussing overthrowing the Government and establishing a Soviet.
The Berlin authorities are planning to deal with any emergency. They conducted searches of Communists’ homes and offices, and papers seized already have confirmed the suspicions of a conspiracy between German and Russian Communists.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
