An Auckland telegram states that Sir James Coates has accepted a position on the directorate of the South British Insurance Company. A Sydney message reports the death of Mr. W. H. Phillips, a Maori War veteran, who was awarded the New Zealand medal. A London message states that after being operated on for appendicitis, Mr. Winston Churchill ■ had a good night, and his condition is satisfactory. Hie Taranaki Chamber of Commerce is according a luncheon to Mr. Allan Wilkie, the Shakesperian scholar and actor, next Thursday, when Mr. Wilkie will speak on “Shakespeare and the British Empire.’ At a meeting of directors of the Taranaki Meat Works after the annual meeting yesterday, Mr. J. T. Quin, who has been chairman of the company since its inception, tendered his resignation, Mr. Newton King being appointed temporary chairman. , Miss E. M. White, who was recently successful in rt Victoria League competition for a patriotic poem composed by a junior member, was presented with a small volume of patriotic verse- at the annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League last night.
