TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Special train services from New Plymouth, in the north, and Palmerston in the south, promise to materially help the attendance at Waverley races on Monday next. This gathering is always a popular one with Taranaki sports, the bulk of the horses engaged hailing from this province. Next week’s meeting promises to be no exception to the rule, and patrons are assured of a good day’s sport. In addition to the acceptors published last week. Irapuka (9.9) has been paid up for in the Brewer Handicap, and Halgina (8.9) for the Jackson Memorial Handicap. Ma ioha has been struck out of the Wellington Handicap at Trentham, and Solrino and Nym have been withdrawn from the October Handicap. The C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap has engaged a little attention during the week, the appearance of the weights stimulating a little wagering in “doubles" with the Cup. Solfane’lo, who won the Stewards’ las* year with 9.3, is well cared for this time, being awarded 9.13. The Hawke, who failed under 8.11, also has a big 10ad—9.7. Rational, third last year with 8.13, is not badly treated with 9.3. Pluto, who was unplaced in his last, three starts, catches it hot with 9.1. and Songbird has his full desserts in 9.0. Of the above Rational appears to be the best treated. Epitaph (8.3) reads well amongst the Bst. division, and below r t mark Roseday 7.9, Glentruim 7.3, and Gazeworthy 0.8 must have chances. On paper Rational, Epitaph and Glentrulm appeal most, but the highly-spoken of Gazeworthy may also be very hard to beat.
Muraahl is reported to have come through a good preparation for the Wellington Handicap. in which the Campfire gelding will be ridden by A. MaCormack. Mattock was railed through to Trentham yesterdev. The Palmerston horses Santiago, Santonio, Sleeping Beauty and Tussore were sent down op Wednesday. Passenger, Passionless. Winning Hit. with a light boy up. ran a mile in Imin, 41sec. at Riccarton on Tuesday morning. Owlscombe, in company with the MoLean Stakes’ winner, Top Score, ran three furlongs In 37 l-ssec„ and should be a useful member of the Clifford team at the Wellington meeting. Several New Zealand-bred horses came under the hammer at the annual spring sales held in Sydney recently. Tigrinia (Merry Moment—Tigris) was passed In at ITOgns. Brother Bill (Finland—All’s Well), a brother to Island, was sold to Mr. F. Smith, Townsville, for llOgns; and a bay mare by De Witte—The Dove, fell to the bid of Mr. E. Welsh, Queensland, at 20gns.
