MONEY FOR EDUCATION.

DENIAL OF BIG REDUCTION. BIG INCREASE IN VOTE. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. “The rumour of a probable reduction by £1,000,000 in educational expenditure is quite untrue,” said the Minister for Education (the Hon. C. J. Parr) to-day. “Equally untrue is the statement that the Reform Government, if they are re-elected, will reduce educational expenditure by £500,000. I fear these reports are circulated -for election purposes. “The Government record for the past few years is the best indication of its mind on the importance of a liberal education vote. The expenditure on education in 1914 was £1,400,000, and the expenditure passed by the House on the Estimates this year amounted to £3,2'39,412. I hope to maintain the present high, vote, and while minor economies may be effected in the future, I can say without hesitation that no 1 reduction will be made which will impair the general efficiency of our educa tional system. Rather, we shall strive to increase the efficiency of education, and the Government will not object to. the present high vote, if, as I hope, we can make improvements in the system| which will give even better value for the present expenditure than it at present receives.”
