An Amsterdam message says that the ex-Kaiseris wedding has been fixed for November 5 at Doorn.
Mr. Winston Churchill, says a London message, is suffering from appendicitis, but it is not yet known whether an operation will be necessary. A cable received last night states Mr. Churchill ■was operated on for appendicitis. Mr. R. L. Lowe, conductor of the New Plymouth band, left by the mail train yesterday to attend a conference of New Zealand bandmasters, which takes place in Wellington to-day. The death is reported of the wife of Mr. G. W. Sharp, of Kapuni. Mr. and Mrs. Sharp formerly lived at Maha, coming from the Nelson district. She leaves a family of five children.
The death of the Rev. J. C. Yorke, Methodist Minister at Wanganui, is reported, following a serious operation. Mr. Yorke had only recently been appointed to the charge of the Wanganui East Church.
Rev. Father Maples, of Stratford, yesterday received the following cablegram from Cardinal Gasparri, Rome: “On the occasion of your sacerdotal jubilee, the Holy Father heartily sends you his Apostolic Blessing.” Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, of Eltham, hinted at yesterday’s meeting of the New Plymouth Harbor Board that he would not be seeking re-election on the expiry of his present term. He mentioned that he had been a member of the board now for fourteen years.
A function for the purpose of bidding farewell and God-speed to Miss Alice Howell was held in the St. Aubyn Methodist Church on Wednesday evening. The Rev. W. J. Elliott, who presided, explained that Miss Ho-well had been appointed to deaconess work among the Maoris, and he congratulated the congregation upon having a young lady who seemed eminently fitted for the important duties she would have to attend to. Mrs. Mclsaaes presented Miss Howell with a travelling rug, and eulogised her character and zeal, and work on behalf of the church. It was announced that the Hawera Ladies’ Missionary Auxiliary had provided a bicycle for Miss Howell, which •will be presented to her when she takes up her work in that district. The congregation of the St. Aubyn Church passed a resolution expressing their appreciation of the Hawera ladies’ generous gift to Miss Howell.
The Launceston (Tasmania) City Council is in communication with Mr F. T. Bellringer, town manager of New Plymouth, with reference to the position of city manager of Launceston. Some time ago the latter city appointed Mr. F. M. Nicholls, the run-ner-up being Mr. Bellringer. Lately the services of Mr. Nicholls were dispensed with, and Launceston is desirous of securing those of Mr. Bellringer. Spoken to last evening by a News’ representative, Mr. Bellringer said whilst the statement had been published that the Launceston Council was in communication with him, the letter he had received from the Mayor was of a private nature, and therefore lie was unable to make any public statement on the matter.
